Which version applies?
The 2025 civics test (128 questions) applies if you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. If you filed before that date, you take the 2008 version: 10 questions from a list of 100, and you need 6 correct.
How the civics test works
It's an oral test at your interview. The officer asks up to 20 of the 128 questions. You pass once you answer 12 correctly, and the test stops early once you have 12 right or 9 wrong.
65/20 special consideration
If you're 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20+ years, you only study the 20 starred questions and may take the test in your language. The officer asks 10; you need 6 correct.
English exemptions
The 50/20 and 55/15 rules exempt eligible applicants from the English test: age 50 with 20 years as a permanent resident, or age 55 with 15 years. Civics may be taken in your language with an interpreter. Selecting a study language does not change your exam eligibility.
English reading test
You must read 1 of 3 sentences aloud correctly to show you can read English.
English writing test
You must write 1 of 3 sentences correctly as dictated by the officer.
English speaking test
The officer judges your spoken English during the interview itself, mainly while going over your application.
If you don't pass
You get a second chance, usually within 60–90 days. You're only retested on the part you failed (English or civics). Failing again leads to denial.
Answers that change
Questions about current officials (President, Vice President, Speaker, Chief Justice, your senators and representative) must be answered with whoever holds the job on your interview day.
